Mushrooms in supplements: AHCC and reishi
Mushrooms naturally contain a group of carbohydrates called beta-glucans. Researchers are studying how the body responds to these substances. Important: no health claims are authorised for mushrooms and mushroom extracts. This blog therefore describes origin, composition and traditional use, without promises about effects.
AHCC
AHCC (Active Hexose Correlated Compound) is a standardised extract of cultivated mycelia of shiitake, among others. It has been produced in Japan for decades and is sold as a food supplement. Always follow the product label for the dose.
Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum)
Reishi has a long history in traditional Chinese herbalism, where it is called 'lingzhi'. Reishi naturally contains beta-glucans and triterpenes and has a bitter taste. Many people take it in the evening.
Chaga, shiitake, maitake and Lion's Mane
Chaga
Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) grows on birch trees in cold climates (Siberia, Scandinavia, Canada). In those regions it is traditionally drunk as a tea. Chaga has a mild, earthy taste and goes well in warm drinks.
Shiitake and maitake
Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) and maitake (Grifola frondosa) are edible mushrooms that are also used as supplements. Shiitake contains lentinan, a specific beta-glucan; maitake contains, among other things, the so-called D-fraction.
Lion's Mane
Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is mainly discussed in the context of focus and concentration (see our blog on Lion's Mane). Lion's Mane also naturally contains beta-glucans and is often included in mushroom blends.
No health claim is authorised for any of these mushrooms.
Frequently asked questions about mushroom supplements
Can I use mushroom supplements long-term?
Can I use mushroom supplements long-term?
Mushrooms such as shiitake and maitake have been eaten for centuries. Less is known about long-term use of concentrated extracts. Some people use them in cycles (a period on, a period off). Follow the recommended daily dose on the label.
Do mushroom supplements have side effects?
Do mushroom supplements have side effects?
Mushroom supplements are generally well tolerated. Some people notice mild digestive discomfort at first. Do not use them if you are allergic to mushrooms. If you take medication, such as anticoagulants, consult your doctor or pharmacist first.
Can I combine AHCC with individual mushrooms?
Can I combine AHCC with individual mushrooms?
Yes, you can. When combining, add up the total amount of extract and follow the recommended daily dose of each product.
What is the difference between capsules and powder?
What is the difference between capsules and powder?
Capsules: practical, fixed dosage, tasteless. Powder: more flexible, can be mixed into tea/smoothies, often more economical per gram. Taste can sometimes be a barrier — Chaga is suitable for tea, Reishi is bitter.
Can I eat mushrooms during pregnancy?
Can I eat mushrooms during pregnancy?
Little is known about the use of mushroom supplements during pregnancy. As a precautionary measure, it is often advised to avoid them during this period or to use them only after consulting a midwife.
Choosing mushrooms: practical tips
The right choice and use
Choose on the basis of form and taste
- AHCC: a standardised extract in capsules; relatively expensive.
- Reishi: bitter in taste, so often taken in capsules or as an extract.
- Chaga: goes well in tea and other warm drinks.
- Mushroom blend: several types in one product, for example maitake and reishi.
- Lion's Mane: often chosen as a powder for coffee or smoothies.
Practical tips
Fruiting body or mycelium
Fruiting body products often have a different composition from mycelium products (fungal threads, often grown on grain). The label shows which part was used.
Beta-glucan content
Some products state the percentage of beta-glucans. That tells you something about the composition of the extract.
Combining with vitamin D, C and zinc
For vitamin D, vitamin C and zinc it has been established that they contribute to the normal function of the immune system (see our blog on the immune trio). Mushrooms mainly have a long history of traditional use; no health claims are authorised for mushrooms.

If in doubt or if you take medication, consult a doctor or pharmacist. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Keep out of the reach of young children.
