Marine, bovine or bone broth: which collagen is right for you?

Collagen is the most common protein in your body. It is found in skin, tendons, cartilage, bones and connective tissue. Collagen powder is popular, and that makes the choice confusing. We sell three types under our own brands. Here is the difference, without the marketing.

The basics

What a collagen supplement is

Collagen in a jar is hydrolysed collagen. The protein is cut into small pieces (peptides), so it dissolves easily. The source decides which type of collagen you get and how it tastes. Fish mainly provides type I, bovine hide type I and III, and bones and cartilage type II as well. In practice they overlap more than the marketing suggests. So choose mainly on source, taste and how you want to use it.

To be honest up front: in Europe, there are no approved health claims for collagen itself. What we can say: it is a protein, and protein contributes to the maintenance of muscle mass and to the maintenance of normal bones. And vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin. That is why our Pure Marine contains vitamin C from acerola.

From fish

Plent Pure Marine Collagen, with vitamin C

Marine collagen (type I) with 160 mg of vitamin C from acerola per daily serving. It dissolves easily, in hot and cold drinks. There is an unflavoured Naturel version for coffee, tea or yoghurt, and there are five flavours: Chocolate Dream, Pink Raspberry, Citrus Lemonade, Strawberry Lemonade and Tropical Pineapple. Suitable for pescatarians, not for vegans.

From cattle

Plent Pure Bovine Collagen, pure protein

Bovine collagen peptides (type I and III), with no taste and no smell. With 400 grams per jar, it is the most affordable way to take 10 grams of collagen every day. The no-nonsense choice: no flavours, no additives, just protein that goes into anything. People who add it to a shake, porridge or coffee often choose this one.

From bones

Bone Broth Collagen, with flavour

Dried beef bone broth: collagen from bones, cartilage and connective tissue. The difference from the other two: this tastes like broth, and you use it in savoury dishes. In soup, sauce, stew or simply as a warm mug. If you want collagen without turning it into a supplement, this is a good fit. There is an organic version and a Classic version. How to use

How much and when

  • One scoop a day. The usual amount is about 10 grams of collagen: one full scoop.
  • At a fixed time. For example at breakfast, in your coffee, tea or yoghurt. That way you won't forget it.
  • In autumn: warm. There is no season for collagen, but now it is easy to add it to something warm: tea, coffee or a mug of broth.
