Magnesium and your bones
Magnesium is a mineral that is largely stored in your bones. According to the health claims authorised by the EU, magnesium contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and normal teeth. Magnesium also contributes, among other things, to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, to normal muscle function and to normal energy-yielding metabolism.
Research is also looking at the interplay between magnesium, vitamin D and the hormones that regulate calcium balance, such as parathyroid hormone.

Whether your needs are higher depends on factors such as age, lifestyle and diet. Athletes, older people and people who take certain medicines (such as acid reducers or diuretics) often pay extra attention to their magnesium intake. If you take medication or are unsure, talk to your GP or pharmacist.
Magnesium, calcium, vitamin D and K: what do they do?
For your bones it is not about one single nutrient, but about a varied diet in which several nutrients come together:
- Calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal bones.
- Vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption of calcium and to the maintenance of normal bones.
- Magnesium contributes to the maintenance of normal bones.
- Vitamin K contributes to the maintenance of normal bones.
If you want to use a supplement, you can choose separate products or a combination formula that brings these nutrients together in one product.
Frequently asked questions about magnesium for your bones
How much magnesium do I need per day?
How much magnesium do I need per day?
The reference intake (RI) for magnesium is 375 milligrams a day. The Dutch Health Council uses an adequate intake of 350 milligrams for men and 300 milligrams for women. At higher doses, magnesium from supplements can have a laxative effect in some people; EFSA sets an upper level of 250 milligrams a day for magnesium from supplements. So follow the recommended daily dose on the label.
When is the best time to take magnesium?
When is the best time to take magnesium?
For most forms the timing makes little difference. Many people take magnesium with a meal, because that is more comfortable for a sensitive stomach. Choose a fixed moment that suits your daily routine and follow the directions on the label.
May I combine magnesium with calcium?
May I combine magnesium with calcium?
Yes. Calcium and magnesium are often used together and many bone formulas contain both. If you take them separately, you can spread them over the day. When combining products, add up the total daily intake.
Is magnesium spray an alternative to an oral supplement?
Is magnesium spray an alternative to an oral supplement?
Little is known about the absorption of magnesium through the skin and opinions differ. Many people use a magnesium spray as a care product. If you want to supplement your magnesium intake, an oral supplement (capsules, powder or liquid) is the more obvious choice.
Do I need magnesium if I'm already taking a multivitamin?
Do I need magnesium if I'm already taking a multivitamin?
A multivitamin often contains a lower dose of magnesium, for example 50-100 milligrams. The label shows how much magnesium you get per daily dose and what percentage of the reference intake that is. If you want to add more, add up the total intake.
Which form of magnesium do you choose?
Choosing the right form
Magnesium comes in many different forms in supplements. They differ in the compound the magnesium is bound to, in the magnesium content per gram and in practical properties. The most common forms:
Magnesium bisglycinate (glycinate)
Magnesium bound to the amino acid glycine. Gentle on the stomach and often chosen for use in the evening.
Magnesium citrate
Magnesium bound to citric acid. Dissolves well in water. At higher doses it can have a mild laxative effect.
Magnesium malate
Magnesium bound to malic acid (malate), a substance found naturally in fruit.
Liquid ionic magnesium
Magnesium in dissolved form. Practical for anyone who does not want to swallow capsules or wants a flexible dose.
Magnesium oxide
Widely used because of its high magnesium content per gram. At higher doses it can have a laxative effect.
Which form you choose mainly depends on your preference (capsule, powder or liquid) and on how your stomach reacts. Magnesium contributes to the maintenance of normal bones whatever the form, as long as the product provides enough magnesium per daily dose.

If in doubt or if you take medication, consult a doctor or pharmacist. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Keep out of the reach of young children.
