Wat zijn psylliumvezels? Gebruik, vormen, dosering & keuzetips

What is psyllium husk?

Psyllium husk, also known as psyllium fibre or ispaghula, consists of the thin shells around the seeds of Plantago ovata. These shells are mostly made up of soluble fibre. Mix them with water and within a few minutes they form a soft gel.

That makes psyllium popular in two ways: as an easy fibre addition to your daily diet, and as a binder in (gluten-free) baking. It has a neutral taste and is naturally gluten-free and plant-based.

How much fibre do you need? EFSA sets an adequate intake of around 25 grams of dietary fibre per day for adults. You get that first and foremost from vegetables, fruit, wholegrain products, pulses, nuts and seeds. Psyllium is a practical addition on days when that doesn't work out.

Husk, powder or capsules: which form should you choose?

Whole husk

The whole, coarsely ground shells. Versatile: stir into yoghurt, mix into a glass of water or add to dough. For baking, you can briefly grind them finer in a blender. For example Big Food Psyllium Husk Pure & Organic (400 g).

Powder

The same fibre, but more finely ground. It mixes faster and binds more strongly, which is handy in drinks and in gluten-free baking.

Capsules

For those who prefer not to mix anything or are often on the go. Always take them with a full glass of water. For example KiKi Health Psyllium Husks capsules (organic).
