About the collection

Written by the Plenthera team (trained in orthomolecular nutrition). Scientifically reviewed in May 2026. Last updated: 18 September 2026.

A greens blend combines several green powders in one formula: chlorella, spirulina, barley grass, wheatgrass, alfalfa grass, broccoli, spinach and kale powders, sometimes supplemented with fruit, mushrooms or live cultures. Handy for those who do not want five separate jars on the shelf but are looking for a broad nutrient profile in one scoop.

What is usually in a greens blend?

A good blend contains: (1) an algae component (chlorella, spirulina) for protein, chlorophyll and B vitamins; (2) grasses (barley grass, wheatgrass) for chlorophyll, fibre and minerals; (3) vegetable powders (broccoli, spinach, kale) for phytonutrients; (4) sometimes extras such as organic berries, adaptogenic herbs or live cultures.

How do you choose a good greens blend?

Look for: (1) a short, recognisable ingredient list — avoid 'proprietary blends' without exact amounts; (2) a lab report per batch on heavy metals (the algae component is critical; limits in Regulation (EU) 2023/915); (3) organic cultivation where possible; (4) no unnecessary sweeteners or fillers; (5) honesty about what the blend does and does not provide — a B12 statement only if a genuine B12 source has been added.

Frequently asked questions

What is the advantage of a blend over single algae?

Convenience (one jar instead of five), slightly broader coverage of phytonutrients and, with a well-considered formulation, a more complete profile. Disadvantage: less control over the exact amount of each component.

Does a greens blend replace my vegetable intake?

No. A scoop (5-10 g) of greens blend provides a fraction of the fibre, water and volume that the recommended 250 grams of fresh vegetables per day offers. It is a supplement, not a replacement.

When is the best time to take a greens blend?

The timing is flexible. Many users take greens in the morning, in water or in a smoothie. With a sensitive stomach, preferably with a meal.

Does a greens blend contain enough B12?

Only if a B12 source has been explicitly added (and stated on the label). The B12 analogues in spirulina are not biologically active for humans; chlorella contains active B12 in variable amounts and is therefore not a reliable source.

What does a greens blend taste like?

Distinctly green, often slightly bitter. More pleasant in a fruit smoothie or fruit juice than in plain water.
