About the collection

Written by the Plenthera team (trained in orthomolecular nutrition). Scientifically reviewed in April 2026. Last updated: 18 September 2026.

Nattokinase is perhaps the most remarkable enzyme in this category — a fibrinolytic enzyme from fermented soybean that can break down fibrin (the protein in blood clots). It was isolated in Japan in 1980 from natto, a traditional breakfast dish. At Plenthera you will find premium nattokinase as capsules standardised to 2,000+ FU per serving. CRUCIAL NOTE: if you use blood thinners or before surgery, always consult a doctor beforehand.

Which nattokinase suits you?

Form FU Best for
Capsules 2000 FU Standard General cardiovascular theme
Capsules 4000 FU High Highest fibrinolytic activity (in consultation with a doctor)
+ serrapeptase Variable Premium fibrinolytic combination

What is nattokinase?

Nattokinase is a fibrinolytic (fibrin-degrading) enzyme obtained from Japanese natto — soybean fermented by Bacillus subtilis natto. It was discovered in 1980 by Dr Hiroyuki Sumi and has since been clinically researched for cardiovascular applications.

Natto is a Japanese breakfast dish with a distinctive taste, texture and smell — made from soybeans fermented with the bacterium Bacillus subtilis natto. In 1980, Dr Sumi isolated the enzyme nattokinase from this fermentation and demonstrated its fibrinolytic action — fibrin (the protein component of blood clots) was broken down in vitro. Since then, nattokinase has been intensively researched for cardiovascular applications.

In clinical research, nattokinase has been studied in connection with blood pressure, fibrinogen levels and vascular function. The results are positive in several small-scale studies; larger research is under way. The main practical note: nattokinase acts on the clotting system — which is why medical caution is essential.

For those who want to approach the cardiovascular theme more broadly — alongside omega 3, Q10 and turmeric — nattokinase can be a logical addition. But only in consultation with a doctor where there are clotting disorders or blood thinners are being used. See our omega 3 category and our turmeric category for related categories.

What does science say about nattokinase?

Scientific research into nattokinase focuses on cardiovascular applications — fibrinolysis, blood pressure, fibrinogen levels, vascular function. Clinical research in humans shows positive results in small-scale studies, often with doses of 100-200 mg per day. Nattokinase is a food supplement, not a medicine.

CRUCIAL: if you use blood thinners (warfarin, NOACs, aspirin), before surgery (avoid for 2 weeks beforehand), with clotting disorders or a tendency to bleed: do NOT use without medical consultation.

The nattokinase forms at Plenthera

Nattokinase 2000 FU capsules

Standard dose — 100 mg per capsule with 2,000 FU. For the general cardiovascular theme.

Nattokinase 4000 FU capsules

Higher dose — for those who want higher fibrinolytic activity. Premium price point.

Nattokinase + serrapeptase

A combination of two fibrinolytic enzymes — premium niche.

How do you use nattokinase?

A simple basic approach for nattokinase:

  1. Take between meals for the systemic effect.
  2. Standard 100-200 mg/day (2,000-4,000 FU).
  3. If you use blood thinners: consult a doctor beforehand.
  4. Before surgery: stop at least 2 weeks beforehand.
  5. If in doubt or in a medical context: consult a doctor.

Myths and misconceptions about nattokinase

Myth 1: "Nattokinase is a natural aspirin."

Incorrect. Aspirin inhibits the clumping of blood platelets (platelet aggregation); nattokinase acts fibrinolytically, i.e. on fibrin that has already formed. Two different mechanisms — nattokinase is not a substitute for aspirin in a medical context.

Myth 2: "Anyone can safely take nattokinase."

Incorrect. With blood thinners, before surgery, during pregnancy or with a tendency to bleed: avoid or seek medical advice.

Myth 3: "The more nattokinase, the better."

Above 4,000 FU/day no additional effect has been demonstrated, and the risk of bleeding increases.

Myth 4: "Eating fresh natto provides enough nattokinase."

For the wholefood route: yes, partly. However, the dose from food is much lower and less consistent than that of a standardised supplement.

Combining nattokinase with other supplements

Nattokinase is often combined within the cardiovascular theme. Popular combinations:

  • Omega 3: EPA and DHA contribute to the normal function of the heart (with a daily intake of 250 mg EPA and DHA).
  • Q10: part of mitochondrial energy production.
  • Magnesium: contributes to normal muscle function.
  • Turmeric: being researched in connection with joints and recovery.
  • Vitamin K2: contributes to normal blood clotting — so it works in a different direction from nattokinase. Coordinate carefully with a doctor.

Frequently asked questions

What is nattokinase?

A fibrinolytic enzyme from Japanese natto.

How does nattokinase work?

It breaks down fibrin (the protein in blood clots); it is being researched in connection with natural fibrinolysis.

How much nattokinase per day?

100-200 mg, 2,000-4,000 FU.

When should you take nattokinase?

Between meals for the systemic effect.

Can nattokinase be taken with blood thinners?

NOT without medical consultation — risk of bleeding.

What is FU for nattokinase?

Fibrinolytic Units — the unit for fibrinolytic activity.

Nattokinase for circulation?

Being clinically researched in a cardiovascular context.

Difference between nattokinase and aspirin?

Aspirin inhibits platelets, nattokinase breaks down fibrin — not interchangeable in a medical context.

Does nattokinase have side effects?

Possibly: a tendency to bleed at high doses, especially with other antithrombotics.

Vegan nattokinase?

Yes — from soy fermentation, plant-based.
