Green Pasture is an American brand from Nebraska that makes liver oils the traditional way: by fermentation, without heating and without solvents. In addition to fermented cod liver oil and skate liver oil, the brand makes concentrated butter oil from grass-fed cows. At Plenthera you will find the range as liquid, gel and capsules.
About Green Pasture
Most modern fish oils are extracted with heat and then distilled and refined. Green Pasture deliberately chooses a different route: the livers ferment, releasing the oil. The oil is not distilled afterwards. This produces an unrefined oil with a distinctive taste, the way cod liver oil used to be made.
The brand is inspired by the work of the American dentist Weston A. Price, who described traditional dietary patterns around the world in the 1930s. In these, liver oils and butter from grazing cows played a regular role. The cod (Gadus macrocephalus) comes from MSC-certified fisheries in Alaska, the skate from the Bering Sea; the butter oil is obtained by cold centrifugation from the milk fat of grass-fed cows.

Frequently asked questions
What is Green Pasture?
An American brand from Nebraska that makes traditionally fermented liver oils (cod and skate) and concentrated butter oil from grass-fed cows.
What does fermented cod liver oil mean?
The oil is released by fermenting the livers, rather than by heating or solvents. The oil is not distilled afterwards. As a result, it has a distinctive, strong taste.
What is the difference between cod liver oil, skate liver oil and butter oil?
Cod liver oil comes from the liver of Alaskan cod, skate liver oil from the liver of skate from the Bering Sea. Butter oil is concentrated milk fat from grass-fed cows, not a fish oil and not a source of omega-3. Green Pasture also combines cod liver oil and butter oil in one product.
Should I choose liquid, gel or capsules?
Liquid (2 ml per day) and gel (½ teaspoon per day) are the best value and are available flavoured, such as orange, cinnamon or chocolate. Capsules (2 per day) are tasteless and handy on the go.
Does Green Pasture contain vitamins?
Cod liver oil naturally contains fat-soluble vitamins, such as vitamin A and D. Because the levels vary naturally, the label does not state them as a fixed amount.
Is Green Pasture suitable for everyone?
No. The liver oils contain fish, the butter oil contains milk; not suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Cod liver oil naturally contains vitamin A: if pregnant, consult your doctor first.
