Zaadjes werden gevonden in het graf van Toetanchamon (1.323 v.Chr.). De Griekse arts Dioscorides beschreef het in zijn herborium uit de 1e eeuw n.Chr. In de islamitische traditie wordt de olie sterk aanbevolen — een van de bekendste hadiths verwijst naar habba al-baraka (\"zegen-zaadje\") als brede genezer.
