The Gut-Brain Axis: Why Your Gut Health Affects Your Mood and Energy

The gut is sometimes called "the second brain" — and that's not just a marketing slogan. Your gut contains a network of over 100 million nerve cells, its own operating system that is in constant dialogue with your brain via what is called the gut-brain axis. What happens in your gut — which bacteria live there, how well you digest, whether there are inflammatory processes — directly affects your mood, your focus, your energy levels, and even your sleep. In this article, we unravel how this connection works and what practical steps you can take to support both sides.

What is the gut-brain axis and how does your gut microbiome influence your mood?

The gut-brain axis is a two-way communication between your gut and your central nervous system. This communication occurs through three channels simultaneously:

  • The vagus nerve— the main connection nerve that directly exchanges signals between the gut and the brain.
  • Hormonal signals— hormones and neurotransmitters produced by your gut cells (including about 90% of your serotonin and a large part of your dopamine).
  • Theimmune system — approximately 70% of your immune cells are in and around the gut, and these produce signaling substances that also reach your brain.

The third channel is the microbiome route. The billions of bacteria in your gut produce substances (short-chain fatty acids, neurotransmitter precursors, vitamins) that also reach your brain.

How does your gut flora influence your mood? 

Your gut bacteria produce or influence the production of several neurotransmitters that are central to your mood and mental state. A few important ones:

Serotonin — the "happy" neurotransmitter 

Approximately 90% of your body's serotonin is produced in the gut, not in the brain. Although this gut serotonin does not directly cross the blood-brain barrier, it does influence the signals that go to your brain via the vagus nerve. A healthy gut flora supports this production.

GABA — the brake on stress 

Some gut bacteria (including Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains) produce GABA — a neurotransmitter that helps to calm the nervous system. With a disrupted gut flora, this production can be suboptimal.

Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) 

When gut bacteria ferment fibers, they produce substances like butyrate, propionate, and acetate. These SCFAs play a role in brain function, inflammatory processes, and the structure of brain cells. They are one of the most interesting links in the gut-brain connection.

How an unhealthy gut flora disrupts your brain

In cases of imbalanced gut microbiota ("dysbiosis"), shifts in the predominant bacteria can be observed. Insufficient fiber, high sugar intake, chronic stress, antibiotics, and alcohol consumption can trigger this. The consequences are broader than one might think:

  • Reduced SCFA production— fewer beneficial signals to the brain.
  • Increased intestinal permeability ("leaky gut")— inflammation-promoting substances leak into the bloodstream.
  • Elevated inflammatory signals — chronic low-grade inflammation often correlates with fatigue, low mood, and "brain fog." 
  • Disrupted neurotransmitter balance— less serotonin, GABA, and dopamine precursors.

What often arises in practice: people with disrupted gut flora not only report digestive issues but also mood swings, low energy, poorer focus, and worse sleep. The gut-brain axis is not a one-way street — restoring balance on one side often supports the other as well.

1. Eat for your gut flora 

A varied, fiber-rich diet is the foundation. Aim for 30 different plant-based products per week (vegetables, fruits, legumes, grains, nuts, seeds, herbs). The diversity of fibers feeds a diversity of bacterial strains — and diversity is an important marker of healthy gut flora.

2. Add fermented products 

Yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, tempeh, and kombucha contain live bacteria that can supplement your gut flora. Start gradually if you're not used to them yet — too large a portion at once can initially cause more flatulence.

3. Support with probiotics where necessary 

During periods of stress, after antibiotics, after a holiday with traveler's diarrhea, or with chronic complaints, probiotic supplements can help restore balance more quickly. 4. Limit gut-stressors 

Refined sugars, ultra-processed foods, excessive alcohol, chronic stress, and unregulated antibiotic use are the biggest disruptors. Total avoidance is not necessary, but a more conscious approach is beneficial for your gut flora and your mental state.

5. Ensure good sleep and exercise 

Your gut flora also has its own circadian rhythm — poor sleep disrupts it. Regular exercise (especially walking) promotes diversity. Both work through the gut-brain axis to affect your mood and energy.

Your gut and your brain form one cooperative system — what's good for one almost always helps the other. A varied, fiber-rich diet, fermented foods, sufficient sleep, exercise, and stress management form the foundation.
