Slippery elm is the English name for the inner bark of Ulmus fulva, a North American elm. The bark is ground into a fine powder that is naturally rich in mucilage — a complex of water-soluble fibers that form a gel-like texture when in contact with water. Indigenous tribes in North America have used elm bark for centuries; in Western herbal medicine, it has been known since the 19th century.

What is mucilage?

Mucilage is a collective term for water-soluble polysaccharides that swell upon contact with water and form a gel-like structure. Other plant sources of mucilage include psyllium, flaxseed, chia, althaea root (marshmallow), and vetch. Mucilage is not physically digested in the small intestine — it passes through the digestive tract largely intact.

What is the best time to take elm bark?

KiKi Health recommends taking it in the evening — at least 2 hours after other supplements or medication. Reason: the mucilage layer in the digestive tract can slow down the absorption of concurrently taken substances. For most people, evening intake works best practically.

Why should I take it with plenty of water?
