Magnesium and fatigue: the role in your energy metabolism

Fatigue has many causes. Sometimes the cause is clear—too little sleep, a busy period, illness. But often, fatigue lingers without a clear identifiable cause. In such cases, it's worth examining your nutrients. Magnesium is one of the minerals directly involved in your energy metabolism. How magnesium powers your energy — and who is susceptible

Every cell in your body uses energy in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) — the universal energy currency of the body. Magnesium is an indispensable cofactor in this: ATP is only biologically active in the body as magnesium-ATP. Without sufficient magnesium, your cells cannot effectively use the ATP they produce.

In addition, magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions — including the breakdown of glucose, fats, and proteinsinto usable energy. If magnesium status is suboptimal, this entire process will run less smoothly. Fatigue is often the first noticeable consequence.

Who is susceptible to magnesium-related fatigue? 

People with chronic stress 

During prolonged stress, the body consumes more magnesium — partly through increased excretion via urine. What starts as stress can thus lead to a deficiency, which in turn amplifies fatigue and stress sensitivity. A vicious cycle that can be broken with good magnesium status.

Athletes 

During intensive exercise, magnesium is lost through sweat and more is consumed for muscle function and recovery. Athletes who train daily or intensely have an increased need. Symptoms of a sport-related magnesium deficiency: muscle cramps, slow recovery after training, tired legs.

People who sleep poorly 

Magnesium regulates the functioning of the nervous system and helps with relaxation. A deficiency can make it harder to fall asleep, or you might wake up more often. Poor sleep, in turn, leads to more fatigue during the day — another vicious cycle here.

Seniors and users of certain medications 

As we age, magnesium absorption from food slightly decreases. Users of antacids (PPIs) and some diuretics also have an increased risk of deficiency.

People with irregular or unbalanced eating patterns 

Magnesium is mainly found in nuts, seeds, legumes, dark green leafy vegetables, whole grains, and dark chocolate. Those who eat little of these categories will quickly have a suboptimal intake. The average Dutch intake is below the recommended daily allowance for many people.

Which magnesium form for which type of fatigue?

Not every form of magnesium works the same way. Different forms are best suited for different types of fatigue:

Fatigue + poor sleep → bisglycinate (glycinate) 

Magnesium bisglycinate (bound to glycine) has high bioavailability and has a slightly relaxing effect — especially on the nervous system. The combination with taurine enhances this calming effect. Take in the evening, about an hour before sleep.

Fatigue + lack of energy → malate 

Magnesium malate (bound to malic acid) is often chosen by people with chronic fatigue. Malic acid directly participates in the citric acid cycle — the central link in ATP production. Take in the morning for light energy support throughout the day.

Fatigue from sports → liquid magnesium / electrolytes 

For athletes who want to replenish magnesium quickly — especially around training or in hot weather — liquid ionic magnesium or an electrolyte mix often works well. Quickly absorbed, suitable for pre- or post-workout. Combine with sufficient water.

Broad fatigue → a complex with multiple forms of magnesium 

For those who combine different forms of fatigue (body + mind + muscles), a complex with multiple forms of magnesium — for example, bisglycinate + citrate + malate — can provide the broadest effect.
